Subject

Visual communication always happens at multiple levels. While  factual information is conveyed to the viewer by recognizable visible objects, it is the abstract  features of an image that are crucial in carrying emotional information and building attitude. Abstract visual signs work independently from the factual content of an image and are perceived by most people subconsciously. However, their meaning is very precise, and understanding them is essential for anyone who works with visuals. We provide systematic practical and theoretical insight into how visual signs work: size, shape, weight, position, space, distance, direction, color, texture, etc.

Course Description

Every unit will be dedicated to a particular visual element: SIZE, POSITION, SHAPE, DISTANCE, COLOR, TEXTURE, etc. After a brief theoretical introduction, students will explore the features of the selected element, experiment with its expressive possibilities, try out various genres, materials, and techniques, and engage in a multitude of examples, individual and group exercises, and creative assignments. All results will be documented in a workbook developed jointly during the course.

For Whom
