Subject

A photobook is a self-contained work of art in the form of a book, in which the individual photographs become part of a whole, creating a visual narrative and telling a story. As opposed to the photo album, which shows reproductions of the actual works (photographs or series of photographs), the photobook is itself an original work of art.

The photobook has emerged as an increasingly significant medium for photographers and artists to showcase their work. Photobooks provide photographers with a platform to reach a wider audience beyond traditional gallery spaces. They can be distributed and shared more easily, allowing photographers to connect with viewers around the world.

Course Description

During the workshop, participants shall present their photobook projects or ideas, and their photographed material. Depending on the needs of each project, we will work jointly on elements of photobook creation relevant to the individual project, such as: idea and concept development, visual narration, photo editing, image sequencing, the inclusion and the role of text, spread composing and layout dramaturgy; but also book formats, design and typography, as well as physical aspects such as paper, printing technology and materials, binding techniques etc.; and, last but not least, questions regarding the publishing of photobooks and issues of marketing the work.

For Whom

The workshop is aimed at students, aspiring and professional photographers and artists who wish to create a photobook. If you are interested in the medium of the photobook and want to explore its possibilities, this workshop will give you an opportunity to venture into the field. No previous experience with photobooks is expected.

What You Need

Participants need to bring photographed material that they would like to develop into a photobook. Please print your images, format A6 or A7 (4 to 8 images per A4 page), regular laser print on plain paper, no fine art prints necessary). Keep in mind to bring much more material than the actual book will need, so that there is enough to select from. Please also bring any additional material you may have for your project.
